Key takeaways
- You can check AI Overviews for free, but only as a snapshot. Trend tracking, citation URLs and competitor data are where the paywall starts.
- SEO.com's free AI Overview Checker is the most capable no-signup option: it scans your top 100 keywords and shows which trigger an AI Overview next to your organic position.
- Google Search Console blends AI Overview data into regular Web results, so you can't isolate AIO clicks or see which queries trigger them.
- ChatGPT-only checkers tell you very little about AI Overviews. The two cite different sources.
- Paid daily monitoring starts around the price of a nice dinner out, from roughly EUR 79/month, and climbs past $199/month for add-ons like Ahrefs Brand Radar.
What "free" actually means here
I went through the free options with one question: does this tell me something I can act on, or does it just tease a dashboard I have to pay for? The answer varies a lot.
Free in this category falls into four buckets:
- One-shot checkers that scan a keyword list and forget you.
- Free tiers inside bigger SEO suites, capped hard.
- Time-limited trials (14 days is typical).
- Free tools that check readiness, not visibility.
None of these is a bad deal. They just do different jobs, and mixing them up is how people end up with a spreadsheet of screenshots and no real answer.
Why AI Overview tracking is harder than classic rank tracking
A blue-link position is relatively stable. An AI Overview isn't. Whether one appears, which sources it cites and how it's worded can change by query, location, device and time. The Omnia team puts it plainly: you might show up for a prompt on one user's device and be omitted entirely on another's.
That is why a manual screenshot folder stops working at about a dozen searches. It is also why "free" tools are mostly good for a first look rather than ongoing monitoring.

Why a ChatGPT-only check won't do
Several free AI visibility checkers only look at ChatGPT. That's a problem, because the engines pull from different places. In Searchable's data, only 25.2% of 80,525 prompt-and-domain pairs cited by AI Overviews were also cited by ChatGPT.
Promptwatch's data shows the same split on social sources. From Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms made up 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations versus 0.46% for ChatGPT, roughly 26 times higher. YouTube led AI Overviews at 4.28%, and TikTok showed up only there (see the social media citations report).

So if a free tool says "you're visible" based on ChatGPT alone, treat it as half a picture.
The free options, one by one
SEO.com AI Overview Checker
The strongest free pick for pure AI Overview checking. It needs no signup, examines your top 100 keywords, flags which ones trigger an AI Overview and shows your organic ranking position beside the result. LLM Pulse's roundup lists it as offering 3 free checks per day, so expect some usage limits.
The catch: it's a snapshot. You get no history, no competitor view and, per Searchable's review, tools in this class generally detect whether a citation is present rather than its position.
Semrush free plan
Per Writesonic's roundup, AI Overview tracking inside Position Tracking is included on any Semrush plan, including the free one, but limited. It covers AI Overviews only, not other AI engines. Semrush's separate AI Visibility Toolkit is $99/month. I haven't verified the current free-plan caps, so check Semrush's pricing page before relying on it.
Semrush's own research says its Sensor sees AI Overviews on over 50% of queries, and that its tool shows where AIOs appear for keywords you already rank for plus the AIO keywords you're missing. That gap list is the useful part.
Google Search Console
Free, authoritative, and frustrating for this specific job. Search Console blends AI Overview impressions and clicks into regular Web results. You can't isolate AIO clicks, see which queries trigger an AIO or track brand mentions. It also reports average position instead of daily checks, has no city targeting or competitor data, and keeps 16 months of history.
Still, you should have it connected. It's the baseline for what actually reaches your site.
Omnia's free AI Visibility Checker
Runs 3 category-relevant prompts in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and returns a report in 3 to 5 minutes, with no credit card. Note what's missing: it does not cover AI Overviews. For ongoing daily AI Overviews monitoring you need the Growth plan at EUR 79/month after a 14-day trial.

SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker free plan
The free plan allows 1 project and doesn't save ranking data, per Search Atlas's review. The source says nothing about AI Overview tracking in this plan, so I wouldn't count on it for this purpose.

Free trials worth using
Trials aren't free tools, but a 14-day trial is long enough to audit a keyword set properly. Nightwatch, SE Ranking and TrueRanker offer 14-day trials with no credit card, according to Search Atlas. SERPWatcher has a 48-hour money-back guarantee instead.

Readiness checkers
Geotoolbox's AI Crawler Checker, llms.txt Checker and AI Readiness tool are genuinely free, but they check whether AI systems can read your site, not whether you appear in AI Overviews. Useful prep work. Not tracking.
Comparison: free access and the catch
| Option | What's free | Covers AI Overviews? | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO.com AI Overview Checker | Top 100 keywords, no signup | Yes | Snapshot only, limited checks per day |
| Semrush free plan | Limited Position Tracking with AIO data | Yes, AIO only | Caps unverified, other AI engines need a $99/mo toolkit |
| Google Search Console | Full access | Blended, not isolated | No AIO filter, average position only |
| Omnia AI Visibility Checker | 3 prompts, no card | No (ChatGPT and AI Mode) | Daily AIO monitoring from EUR 79/mo |
| SEO PowerSuite free | 1 project | Not stated | Doesn't save ranking data |
| SE Ranking, Nightwatch, TrueRanker | 14-day trials | Varies by plan | Trial ends, then paid |
| Geotoolbox tools | Readiness checks | No | Full citation tracking is paid |
Where the paywall starts
Here are the paid reference points from the research, so you know what you're comparing against:
| Tool | Starting price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Omnia Growth | EUR 79/mo | Daily AIO monitoring, 14-day trial |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo | Separate from the base plan |
| SE Ranking | $129/mo plus $89/mo AI Search add-on | A LinkedIn roundup cites $95.20/mo annual for Pro; sources conflict, so verify |
| Advanced Web Ranking | $139/mo | AI Visibility module with citation reporting |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | From $199/mo | Add-on |
| seoClarity ArcAI | Quote only | Prompt tracking from 500 prompts |
Also worth knowing: Wincher and Mangools SERPWatcher had no AI visibility tracking at all as of August 2026, so don't pick either for this job.

What the free tier can't tell you
Three things consistently sit behind the paywall.
Trend lines. A single check tells you what Google showed once. You need daily runs to see volatility, and that is what paid plans sell.
Citation detail. The useful question is which domains and formats win. Promptwatch's July 2026 data shows AI Overviews citing listicles at an 18.0% average share, product pages at 16.3%, how-tos at 15.1% and news at 13.5%, with product pages the top format every day from July 28 (AI Overviews citation types, July 2026). Domain mix is moving too: in June 2026, YouTube held 4.16% of AI Overviews citations, Reddit 2.72% and google.com 2.30%, together more than 9% (June 2026 citation share). A free checker that only says "you're in" or "you're out" can't show you that.
Competitor comparison. Share of voice against named rivals is almost always a paid feature.
A practical free workflow
If you want to spend nothing for a month, this is the order I'd use:
- Connect Search Console and export your top queries as your baseline.
- Run SEO.com's checker on your top 100 keywords. Note which trigger an AIO and where you rank organically.
- Use Semrush's free Position Tracking for a small tracked set, and look at the missing-AIO-keyword view.
- Manually spot-check about a dozen high-value queries from a couple of locations and devices. Save screenshots with dates.
- Run Omnia's free checker if you also care about ChatGPT and AI Mode.
- Start one 14-day trial on a real tracker with your best 50 keywords and see whether the data changes your decisions.
If step 6 doesn't change anything you'd do, you probably don't need to pay yet.
When to move to a paid tracker
Pay when one of these is true: you're making content decisions off AIO citations weekly, you need more than a dozen locations or devices, a client wants reporting, or you want to know why competitors are cited and you're not.
If AI Overviews are just one of several engines you care about, a broader platform makes more sense than stacking free checkers. Promptwatch tracks Google AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and others using real interfaces, and includes a free Explore plan limited to ChatGPT. Its paid tiers start at $95/month and unlock all models, but confirm current pricing at promptwatch.com/pricing. For a wider view of the field, the directories at bestgeosoftware.com and ai-rank-tools.com list dozens of trackers by category.
Other options in the catalog worth a look if you want a cheaper entry point include Otterly.AI and LLM Pulse.

Bottom line
Free gets you an answer to "do my main keywords trigger AI Overviews, and do I show up?" It doesn't get you history, URL-level citations or competitors. Use SEO.com and Search Console to find out whether the problem exists, then spend money only once you know you have one. Pricing and free-plan limits change often, so check each vendor's pricing page before committing.
