Key takeaways
- Social platforms earned 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations from Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, versus 0.46% in ChatGPT and 2.7% in Perplexity (Promptwatch Data).
- YouTube leads the AI Overviews social share at 4.28%. Facebook (2.38%) has more than doubled and now passes Reddit (2.15%).
- Reddit's decline in ChatGPT is dramatic, but in AI Overviews it has eased only gradually. Don't treat the engines as one channel.
- Earlier 2026 studies that say Reddit holds 50%+ of social citations are stale. Check the date range before you build a plan on any number.
- Track each engine separately, and put your effort where the engine actually cites.
The 12% number, explained
The 12% in the title comes from Promptwatch Data's Social Media Citations by AI Model report for October 2026. It covers every citation from each engine between Sep 28 and Oct 4, 2026, collected from the real interfaces of the AI platforms. In that week, social platforms made up 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations.
That is roughly 26 times ChatGPT's share. If you only watch ChatGPT, you would conclude social media barely matters for AI visibility. If you only watch AI Overviews, you would conclude it is a major source layer. Both are true. They are different engines with different habits.
Which platforms make up the 12%
Here is the breakdown for Google AI Overviews from the same week.
| Platform | Share of AI Overviews citations | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 4.28% | Largest social source |
| 2.38% | More than doubled, now ahead of Reddit | |
| 2.15% | Eased gradually through summer | |
| 1.61% | Growing | |
| 1.55% | Growing | |
| TikTok | 0.22% | Appears only in AI Overviews |
Two things stand out to me. First, YouTube is not a surprise, but the size of the gap is. It earns about as much as Facebook and Reddit combined would suggest on their own, and nearly double either. Second, Facebook passing Reddit is the kind of thing that would have sounded absurd a year ago. Public Facebook pages are clearly getting crawled and trusted more than most marketers assume.
TikTok at 0.22% is tiny, but it only shows up in AI Overviews. A small SocialSeal sample of 36 AI Overviews captured in October 2026 found TikTok was the second most-cited site, with 20 of 331 citations, and 30 of 36 answers cited at least one video or social post. That sample is too small to generalize from, and it likely skews toward video-friendly questions. Still, it points the same direction as the larger data: video-heavy queries pull social content in.
How the three engines differ
The same Promptwatch report shows how different the engines are.
| Engine | Total social share | Top platforms |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn 0.86%, Reddit 0.86%, YouTube 0.79% |
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn about 0.3%, Reddit 0.09% |
Averaged across the three engines, YouTube sits at 1.70%, Reddit at 1.03%, LinkedIn at 0.90%, Facebook at 0.81%, Instagram at 0.56%, TikTok at 0.07% and X at 0.04%. X barely registers anywhere. Perplexity gives it a peak of about 0.1%.
ChatGPT has mostly left social behind
ChatGPT's social share fell from 5.8% in the earlier report to 0.46%. Reddit alone dropped from 5.19% to 0.09%. The slide was first flagged in Promptwatch's Reddit citations are dropping in ChatGPT report: Reddit held a steady 3.83% share from Jul 18 to Aug 7, then averaged 0.52% from Aug 14 to 17, an 86.4% relative drop. It began on Aug 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior (see ChatGPT's site: operator shift). Promptwatch noted at the time that a data-collection issue could not be fully ruled out. The October report settled it, with Reddit at 0.09%.
Google is dropping Reddit more slowly
In that same Reddit report, AI Overviews Reddit share eased from about 2.5% to about 2.1% (an 11.3% relative decline), and AI Mode fell from 2.22% to 1.54% (30.5%). So Reddit is losing ground everywhere, but only ChatGPT fell off a cliff.
Why older studies tell a different story
If you have read that Reddit accounts for more than half of social citations, that comes from Wellows' analysis of 350,000+ citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode in January and February 2026. It also reported YouTube as the fastest-growing source, with over 55% month-over-month growth, and Quora in decline.

That was a fair picture of early 2026. It is not the picture now. The YouTube growth trend held up, while the Reddit dominance did not. This is the main lesson of the whole topic: citation share moves by the month, and a number without a date range is nearly useless.
What the social layer means for consumers
Citation share is only half the story. Emplifi and Semrush's 2026 research found that 33% of consumers start product research on a search engine, 15% on a social platform and 11% with an AI tool. About 66% have used AI tools to research products. Consumers who add "Reddit" to a search are mostly after product reviews (66%), real customer experiences (59%) and brand comparisons (40%).

There is also a search fork worth noting. For headphones, "best [X]" gets 823,000 monthly searches and triggers an AI Overview, while "[X] Reddit" gets 1,600 and does not. So the people who ask for Reddit opinions explicitly are not the ones seeing AI Overviews. The social content still gets pulled into the Overview itself, just invisibly.
What to do about it
Promptwatch's own recommendations from the October report are a sensible starting point, and I agree with most of them.
- Google audiences: YouTube first. Then keep public Facebook pages and Instagram profiles complete and active. Nobody wants to hear that Facebook matters, but the data says it does.
- ChatGPT: stop relying on Reddit threads. Put the effort into your own site and into listicles, guides and comparisons. Product pages are the most cited content type in ChatGPT, at 22.4% of citations (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), per Promptwatch's content type report.
- Perplexity: publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit. They tie at 0.86%.
- X: leave it out of AI search plans. It does not register.
A note on schema
SocialSeal's sample found only 23% of the pages Google cited had FAQ markup, and Google says no special markup is required. Don't expect structured data alone to earn you a spot. Content type and platform presence matter more.
How to track your own social share
You can spot-check by running prompts in AI Overviews yourself, but it gets tedious and varies by country. A tracking tool is more reliable for this job. You need three things: citation data by domain and platform, per-engine splits, and a time series so you can see shifts like the Reddit drop.
Promptwatch monitors the actual interfaces of Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and others, and has dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports with a "My channels" filter for your own accounts.

There are other options depending on budget and focus.
| Tool | Social citation angle | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports, plus per-engine tracking | Teams that want to act on the data |
| AEO Vision | Reddit and TikTok insight | Quick social-source checks |
| Profound | Enterprise citation monitoring | Large brands with budget |
| Peec AI | Prompt monitoring | Basic tracking without optimization |
| Wellows | AI citation analytics | Marketing teams studying citation patterns |

Pitfalls when reading the data
Promptwatch lists a handful of mistakes that apply to any social citation tracking:
- Check how many citations were collected around a sudden drop before reacting.
- Compare the actual Reddit URLs cited before and after.
- Track AI Overviews separately from ChatGPT.
- Use rolling trends instead of single-day comparisons.
- Look at which domains gained share when Reddit lost it.
That last one is the most useful. A drop in one platform is always a gain somewhere else, and that is where the content opportunity sits.
Bottom line
The 12% is a Google AI Overviews story, and it is led by YouTube, with Facebook and Reddit close behind. If you are building a social plan around AI visibility in late 2026, start with video, keep your Facebook and Instagram profiles active, and treat ChatGPT as a channel where your own site does the work. Re-check the numbers monthly, because they moved a lot in the past six months and will again. For more of the underlying research, browse the Promptwatch Data hub.
