The Profound Alternatives Market in 2026: Who Gained, Who Got Acquired and Who Shut Down

Sitecore bought Scrunch in June 2026, vendors keep ranking themselves first, and no verified shutdowns turned up. Here is what actually changed among Profound's competitors, and how to choose.

Key takeaways

  • The one verified deal in this research is Sitecore's acquisition of Scrunch, announced June 3, 2026. Scrunch still sells standalone, but its roadmap now belongs to Sitecore.
  • I found no verified shutdowns of any AI visibility tool. Treat claims of dead competitors with suspicion until you see a source.
  • Most "Profound alternatives" lists are written by vendors who rank themselves first. Frase puts Frase first. Maintouch pitches Maintouch. Read them as sales material with useful pricing tables.
  • The market split in 2026: pure trackers (cheap, monitoring only), suite add-ons (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking), enterprise platforms (Profound, AthenaHQ, Scrunch), and tools that also do the content work.
  • Pricing ranges from $29/mo to custom enterprise quotes. Confirm everything on vendor pricing pages before buying.

What this article can and can't tell you

The title promises three stories: who gained, who got acquired, who shut down. I'll be upfront about which ones I can support.

Acquired: one confirmed case. Gained: some evidence, mostly from vendor-published rankings and pricing. Shut down: nothing verified. I searched for it and came up empty, and I'd rather say that than invent a graveyard to make the headline work.

I also did not verify Profound's funding rounds, or whether Semrush, Peec, Otterly or AthenaHQ were involved in any deals. Profound's own site promotes a "Series D" webinar campaign, going by the URL slug, but I have no confirmed amount, so I won't quote one.

The acquisition: Sitecore buys Scrunch

On June 3, 2026, Sitecore announced it had acquired Scrunch. Sitecore describes Scrunch as an "AI customer experience platform" and says the deal adds AI search visibility, answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI content optimization to its stack. CMS Wire lists it as Sitecore's 2026 acquisition, and Sitecore now markets the product as "Sitecore + Scrunch".

What does that mean for buyers? Profound's own comparison page, which is obviously not a neutral source, makes the point bluntly: Scrunch still sells as a standalone product with public pricing, but its roadmap is tied to SitecoreAI integration. If you run Sitecore, that is good news. If you don't, ask how much future investment will be aimed at you.

One date quirk worth flagging. Profound's article is dated May 8, 2026, yet it refers to the Sitecore deal as happening in "June 2026". Either it was edited later or the date is off. The press release date of June 3 is the one to cite.

Scrunch's price could also move. The $250/mo Core plan figure comes from vendor-published lists and was current at the time they were written. Re-check it.

Optimizely and the suite vendors

A Sengo snippet says Optimizely shipped GEO tools and an Agent Visibility feature. I couldn't verify it beyond the snippet. It fits a pattern though: platform vendors are buying or building AI visibility features instead of leaving the category to startups. Sitecore buying Scrunch, Semrush and Ahrefs adding AI modules, SE Ranking launching a separate visibility product. Standalone trackers now compete with their own customers' existing suites.

Who gained

Gaining is harder to prove than acquiring. I don't have market share data, and no public report covers it. What I can point to is where vendor lists and buyer guidance are concentrating attention.

Suite add-ons

Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/mo per domain per Alhena's list) and Ahrefs Brand Radar appear on nearly every alternatives roundup. The pitch is simple: AI tracking sits beside the keyword and backlink data you already pay for. The weakness is depth. Fixed prompt sets and limited AI-specific data are the usual complaints.

Cheap trackers

Otterly.ai starts at $29/mo, the cheapest published multi-engine plan in the Alhena list. Peec AI starts at EUR 85/mo for 50 prompts and 3 models per IndustryLens, which checked prices on October 11-14, 2026. Both are monitoring tools. If you want them to also fix things, you'll be doing that part by hand.

Execution-focused platforms

The pitch that appears most in 2026 roundups is "more than measure". Frase, Writesonic, AthenaHQ and AirOps all lean on it. Frase's ranking (updated September 9, 2026) goes Frase, Writesonic, AthenaHQ, SE Ranking, Semrush, Scrunch, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Peec AI. Frase ranks its own product first, so weigh it accordingly. Its stated ranking logic is still a fair question to ask of any tool: how much of the distance between "AI stopped naming us" and "a corrected page is live" happens inside the product?

That execution gap is the most useful lens in this market. Promptwatch is built around it: it tracks visibility, then helps generate and publish content for the gaps and checks whether the pages got crawled and cited. Its own published data on AI citations is available at Promptwatch Data.

Who shut down

No one, as far as I can verify. I found no sourced shutdown of an AI visibility tool in this research. The directory I work from lists several hundred trackers, many of them tiny. Some of those will disappear, but disappearing quietly is not the same as an announced closure, and I won't point at a name without evidence.

If you're evaluating a small vendor, run a quick survival check instead:

  • Is the pricing page current, with recent dates on the changelog or blog?
  • Is there a named team and a real company behind it?
  • Can you export your data, including prompts, responses and citations, if you leave?
  • Is billing monthly, so you aren't locked into a year with a vendor that might vanish?

How Profound itself positions against the field

Profound describes itself as an agentic marketing platform for the AI era. In its Scrunch comparison it claims 2B+ real user prompts, prompt-level volume data broken down by intent, age, income, country and platform, front-end browser querying that mirrors what real users see, and CDN-level bot tracking via Akamai, AWS, Cloudflare, Fastly, Google Cloud, Netlify, Vercel and WordPress. Those are vendor claims in a vendor-written comparison. A blog post by Blastra lists Target, Walmart, MongoDB and U.S. Bank as notable customers, which is again a secondary source.

The real reasons people leave Profound, per the lists I read, are boring: no published price (it sells Enterprise by demo after a 7-day trial), overkill for small teams, or a preference for a tool bundled into an existing suite.

Comparison table: the main Profound alternatives

Prices below come from vendor-published pages as reported by IndustryLens (checked October 11-14, 2026) and Alhena. They are not independently verified, so confirm before you budget.

Two oddities to watch for in the catalog. "AthenaHQ" with the athenago.com domain is a different company (executive assistants), not the AI visibility tool. Use Athena HQ at athenahq.ai. Similarly, Scrunch appears under two listings, scrunch.com and scrunch.ai. Check which you're buying.

Choosing by team type

This follows the Alhena breakdown, with my own caveats added.

Small team or startup

Otterly.ai at $29/mo or a similar tracker. Don't pay enterprise money to learn what ChatGPT says about you. Tools like Promptwatch also offer a free Explore plan for a first look, though it tracks ChatGPT only.

SEO team already on a suite

Start with whatever you already pay for: Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking. Upgrade when you outgrow fixed prompt sets.

Enterprise with a dedicated AEO team

Profound, AthenaHQ or Scrunch, plus a platform that connects tracking to publishing. Ask about SSO and security certification. If you run Sitecore, Scrunch is now the obvious conversation starter.

Ecommerce brand

Alhena (tracks which SKUs AI recommends) or a platform with shopping coverage. Check whether it reads real ChatGPT shopping carousels or just API output.

Content team that wants less manual work

AirOps, Frase, Writesonic, or an agentic platform. Verify that published pages feed back into tracking so you can tell what worked.

A note on what these tools measure

Promptwatch Data, from a report dated September 23, 2025, found ChatGPT cited about 5 sources per web-search answer, Google AI Overviews about 10, and Perplexity almost exactly 10 each day. Copilot swung from under 2 to nearly 17 sources per response before settling at the low end. Those figures drift with model updates, so treat them as indicative. Source: Average Sources Per Response. The practical point: different engines hand you very different citation opportunities, so a tracker covering only one is giving you part of the picture.

Promptwatch Data does not cover vendor market share, acquisitions or shutdowns. If a roundup quotes market share figures, ask where they came from.

How to read alternatives roundups

  • Check who wrote it. If the author sells a product in the list, assume that product is ranked first.
  • Look for the date prices were checked. IndustryLens states October 11-14, 2026, which is useful. Many pages don't.
  • Ignore claims that "most alternatives require 3-5 tools to match Profound" unless the author shows which features are missing. Nick Lafferty's guide makes that claim and, notably, he also wrote the Profound vs Scrunch piece published on Profound's site. Read his guide as Profound-aligned.
  • Check whether the tool uses real front-end results or API calls. User-facing answers can differ from API outputs.
  • Test with your own prompts during a trial before committing.

More places to compare

If you want to keep digging, the GEO software directory lists more AI visibility platforms, and ai-rank-tools.com focuses on AI rank trackers.

If you'd rather hand the evaluation to specialists, 1001 SEO Media runs GEO and AI search work for brands and uses Promptwatch for its own visibility tracking.

What to do this month

Pick two or three candidates from the table, run the same 20 prompts through each during a free trial, and compare how many of your actual competitors and sources each one finds. Then check the vendor's ownership, because after the Scrunch deal, that is no longer a footnote. Keep the contract monthly until the tool proves it changes what you publish.
