Profound Alternatives for Solo Consultants Tracking AI Search for 3-5 Clients (2026)

Profound's self-serve tiers are gone, and five client workspaces run about $2,094/mo. Here is what solo consultants can use instead in 2026, with real agency limits, per-client math, and the pitfalls to check before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • Profound's public pricing page now shows only a 7-day trial and custom Enterprise. Third-party agency quotes put five client workspaces at roughly $2,094/mo, which is hard to justify for a one-person shop.
  • For 3-5 clients, the number that matters is not the headline price. It is how many client workspaces and prompts per client you actually get.
  • Realistic alternatives for a solo consultant cost between about $200 and $800/mo in total, depending on how many prompts per client you need.
  • Tracking alone does not win clients. You need a tool that also tells you what to fix, or you will end up doing that analysis by hand.
  • Most "best Profound alternative" posts rank their own product first. Treat them as vendor material and check limits on the pricing pages yourself.

Why Profound stops making sense for a solo consultant

Profound was early to this category and it shows. But the product moved upmarket. Its pricing page now lists a free Trial (50 prompts daily for 7 days, ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, one language, one region, no export or API) and a custom Enterprise plan. The older self-serve tiers ($99 Starter, $399 Growth) that still show up in many listicles are no longer on the page.

Agency pricing exists, but it comes through third parties rather than Profound's own brand view. According to Xtrusio's October 2026 breakdown, it is a $99/mo base (5 seats, 10 pitch workspaces) plus $399/mo for each client workspace with 100 daily prompts. Five clients: $99 + 5 x $399 = $2,094/mo. That is a number you would need to bake into every retainer, and it is more than many solo consultants charge a single client.

To be fair, Profound has real strengths: real-user prompt volume panels and a Shopping module covering ChatGPT Shopping and Amazon Rufus. If one of your clients is a large e-commerce brand, that may matter. For everyone else, you are paying for enterprise features you will not open.

What a solo consultant actually needs

Before comparing tools, write down your own requirements. Mine would be these:

  • Separate workspaces per client, so data never mixes and you can hand over a clean report.
  • Enough prompts per client. Promptwatch Data found that 47.6% of ChatGPT responses with citations cite 10 or more unique domains (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), and 52.5% of organic prompts do. One prompt tells you almost nothing. The report's advice is to measure across many prompts, so budget a real prompt set per client, not a handful of vanity queries.
  • Branded reports (white-label PDFs or Looker Studio) so you do not rebuild decks every month.
  • Pitch workspaces, so you can show a prospect their visibility before they sign.
  • Some route from finding a gap to fixing it. If the tool only reports, the fixing is your unpaid evening work.

One more point from Tim Soulo's comparison: the core mechanic is identical across tools. They schedule prompts, store responses and build a dashboard. So the real differences are the data source (real interface vs API) and how prompts get selected. Ask every vendor about both. Note that Soulo is Ahrefs' CMO, so read his Brand Radar conclusion with that in mind.

The options, one by one

Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the option I would put at the top of a solo consultant's shortlist, mainly because the agency plans do not charge per client. Kick-off ($199/mo) and Growth ($399/mo) both include unlimited projects, prompts and team seats, and every model is tracked in every plan. Scale ($799/mo) adds 65,000 responses, faster tracking (every 12, 6 or 1 hours), local GEO/SEO targeting and Fact Check. Confirm current prices at promptwatch.com/pricing.

The difference from pure trackers is what happens after the dashboard. Agent Chat works as an analyst over your live data, the Action Board produces a prioritized to-do list per client, and IP-verified AI crawler logs tell you whether a bot could even read the page. Visitor analytics then show whether AI sends traffic and conversions, which is the thing your client's CFO actually asks about. Pitch projects are available through the app, REST API and MCP.

The honest limitation: agency plans do not include the Content Agent, AEO articles or the Knowledge Base. Those sit on Business ($579/mo) and Enterprise. If you want drafts written and published to a client's WordPress or Webflow, you will either use Business for that client or write the content yourself. See the agency solutions page and the GEO for agencies guide.

There is a 7-day free trial on monthly billing, and a free AI visibility report if you want to test it on a prospect first. 1001 SEO Media, the agency behind this site, uses Promptwatch for its own GEO work.

Peec AI

Peec is clean, quick to learn and priced sensibly for small agencies: Essential at $245/mo ($205 annual) covers 3 client projects, Growth at $495 covers 10. It has free pitch projects, a Looker Studio connector and white-label views. Xtrusio's sample setup gives roughly 55 daily prompts per client across five clients on 3 models, which is thin. It is a monitor rather than an optimizer, so budget time for deciding what to do with the data. If you have exactly three clients and want simple, it is a fair pick. At four or five clients you pay for Growth.

Otterly.AI

Otterly is the cheapest serious route. Standard is $189/mo for 100 prompts, Premium $489/mo for 400, and both reportedly include unlimited workspaces. With Agency Partner status, Premium rises to 500 prompts and adds pitch workspaces, branded Looker Studio dashboards and consolidated invoicing. That works out to about 100 prompts per client across five. Engine coverage is Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot and AI Overviews; Gemini and AI Mode may be paid add-ons, so check.

Scrunch's Agency Core is $500/mo with 250 prompts but only 3 brand workspaces. That fits a three-client consultant and breaks at four. Claude, Gemini, Meta AI and Grok are Enterprise-only on the entry tiers. It does have a useful angle: it audits how AI agents read a site.

If you already pay for Semrush, this is the lowest-friction add-on. The pricing is where I would be careful. Soulo lists Starter $199, Pro+ $299 and Advanced $549, while Xtrusio lists $99/mo per domain with 25 prompts (and $20 for white-label reports), which would be about $495/mo for five clients. Those cannot both be right, so read Semrush's pricing page before deciding. Expect fixed prompt sets and shallower AI-specific data than the dedicated tools.

Starter is $295/mo with 3,600 AI responses a month. Spread over five clients that is about 720 responses each, which is workable for small local businesses and tight for anything competitive. It adds an action center and a content agent, which helps if you want recommendations bundled in.

Plans start at $50/mo for 2,500 checks, with $100 for 7,000 and $250 for 25,000. It covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit, built on a 243M+ prompt database from People Also Ask data. There are no per-entity fees. If your clients already live in Ahrefs, it is cost-effective. It does not include the crawler-log and AI-traffic tracking that Profound (and Promptwatch) provide, as Soulo himself notes, so you will pair it with other tools for attribution.

Frase, Writesonic and SE Ranking

Frase ranks itself first in its own Profound alternatives post, and Writesonic and SE Ranking appear in the same list. All three bundle tracking with content or classic SEO tools. They suit consultants who sell content production and want one subscription, less so those selling pure reporting and strategy.

Rankin AI's list of Profound alternatives, a vendor-written comparison

Treat posts like this one, and Frase's, Maintouch's, Botric's and Geoptie's, as marketing. Each ranks its own product at or near the top. They are useful for finding candidates, not for picking a winner.

Doing the per-client math

Here is a quick way to compare plans honestly. For each tool, divide the monthly price by the number of clients, then divide the prompt or response allowance by the same number.

  • Otterly Premium with Agency Partner: $489 / 5 = about $98 per client, 100 prompts each.
  • Peec Growth: $495 / 5 = $99 per client, with a shared credit pool.
  • AthenaHQ Starter: $295 / 5 = $59 per client, about 720 responses each.
  • Promptwatch Growth: $399 / 5 = about $80 per client, 25,000 responses shared, unlimited prompts.
  • Profound agency: $2,094 / 5 = about $419 per client, 100 daily prompts each.

Compare those with what you charge. If a client pays you $1,500/mo, a $60-100 tool cost is a rounding error. A $419 tool cost is not.

Pitfalls that bite solo consultants

Workspace caps

Scrunch's 3 brand workspaces and Peec Essential's 3 projects are fine today and annoying the day you sign client number four. Pick a plan with headroom.

Pitch workspace caveats

Pitch workspaces often last only 7 days and run 25 prompts. Fine for a teaser, not for a proper audit. Check how long they persist and how many you get per month.

Credits that run out

Shared credit pools sound flexible until one noisy client eats the allowance. Ask what happens at the limit and whether tracking continues.

Dashboards with no next step

A visibility score with no instruction is a data dump. You can fix this with tools that generate an action list, or by building your own workflow. Either way, do not assume the dashboard counts as a deliverable.

No independent accuracy benchmarks

I found none. Each vendor says its data is accurate. The most defensible test is to run the same 20 prompts for one client in two tools and see where the answers diverge. Real interface capture and API capture can give different results, so ask how each vendor collects.

A sensible stack for 3-5 clients

Here is how I would set it up:

  1. Pick one primary tracker with unlimited or generous workspaces. Promptwatch agency plans, Otterly with Agency Partner, or Peec Growth are the candidates.
  2. Add Google Search Console for each client. It is free, and it shows which pages rank but never get cited.
  3. Use AgencyAnalytics or Looker Studio for the client-facing report if your tracker's own export is weak.
  4. Build a prompt set of 30-60 queries per client, mixing organic, brand-specific and competitor-comparison prompts. Brand-specific prompts behave differently: Promptwatch Data shows only 21.3% of them cite 10 or more domains, versus 52.5% of organic ones.
  5. Check crawl access early. If AI bots cannot read a client's pages, no amount of content helps. Promptwatch's free Agentic Readiness Check is a quick first test.

If you want to browse beyond this shortlist, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists dozens more tools, including cheaper entry-level trackers.

Which one should you pick?

  • Three clients, simple reporting, small budget: Peec Essential or Otterly Standard.
  • Four or five clients, lots of pitching: Otterly Premium with Agency Partner, or Peec Growth.
  • Clients who want to know what AI traffic is worth, and you want one tool that also points at fixes: Promptwatch Kick-off or Growth.
  • Already deep in a classic SEO suite: Semrush or Ahrefs Brand Radar, after confirming prompt limits.
  • A large e-commerce client that needs Shopping data: stay with Profound for that one account, or use Promptwatch Business, which includes ChatGPT Shopping insights.

My honest view: for a solo consultant, Profound's current structure is the wrong shape. You are being asked to pay per client like an enterprise reseller. Pick a tool where adding the fifth client costs you almost nothing, run the two-tool comparison on one client for a month, and keep whichever one produced the clearer to-do list.
