Key takeaways
- Social citations vary enormously by engine. In Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms made up 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, 2.7% of Perplexity citations and 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations.
- Reddit's ChatGPT share collapsed on August 14, 2026. Any study from before mid-August that calls Reddit dominant in ChatGPT is stale.
- YouTube is the strongest social source on Google AI Overviews. LinkedIn is the most stable one, and its page types differ by engine.
- Before you buy a GEO tool, check whether it tracks social sources as a dedicated report or only counts them as generic domains. Many tools stop at brand mentions.
- Always check which denominator a statistic uses. Share of social citations and share of all citations are very different numbers.
Why social citation tracking is its own problem
Most GEO tools can tell you whether your brand got mentioned in an AI answer. Fewer can tell you which Reddit thread, YouTube video or LinkedIn post the engine pulled from, and that is the information you need to act. You cannot reply to "reddit.com was cited." You can reply to a specific thread, comment under it, or publish a better video on the same question.
The tricky part is that social citation behavior changed a lot during 2026, and it changed differently on every engine. A tracker that lumps everything together hides that. So before comparing tools, it helps to know what the numbers look like right now.
What the data says about Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn
Read the denominator first
Otterly.AI's Social Media Citation Study 2026 reports Reddit at 46.4% of social media citations in AI search, YouTube at 31.8% and LinkedIn at 13.0%. That is a share of social citations only. Promptwatch measures share of all citations, so its numbers look tiny by comparison. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions, and mixing them produces nonsense.

The Otterly study is worth reading for its engagement experiment: it compared two subreddit communities over 60 days and found that active threads earned about 9x more citations. It also notes that the communities were banned after being flagged for abuse, which is a good reminder that gaming Reddit is a bad plan.
YouTube versus Reddit
Adweek reported that Bluefish found YouTube cited in 16% of LLM answers over six months against 10% for Reddit, a reversal from earlier periods. Averi's analysis reached a similar conclusion for B2B SaaS. These are third-party vendor datasets with their own prompt sets, so treat them as directional.

Promptwatch Data, October 2026
Promptwatch's social media citation report covers Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Averaged across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, the share of all citations was YouTube 1.70%, Reddit 1.03%, LinkedIn 0.90%, Facebook 0.81%, Instagram 0.56%, TikTok 0.07% and X 0.04%.
| Engine | Social share of all citations | Top platforms |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn (~0.3%), Reddit 0.09% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn and Reddit tied at 0.86%, YouTube 0.79% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55% |
That is a 26x gap between AI Overviews and ChatGPT. One strategy cannot serve both.
The Reddit drop in ChatGPT
In Promptwatch's Reddit report, reddit.com held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026, then fell below 1% on Aug 14. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop. The slide began Aug 8, the day ChatGPT changed its fan-out behavior, which Promptwatch covers in its site: operator report.
Promptwatch itself flagged that the size of the drop is provisional and a data-collection issue can't be ruled out. I like that caveat. It is also a lesson about tooling: if your tracker can't show you collection volume and the actual URLs cited before and after a change, you can't tell a real shift from a pipeline bug.
On the Google side, Reddit declined more gently. AI Overviews eased from about 2.5% to 2.1%, and AI Mode fell 30.5% on average.
LinkedIn is not one thing
Promptwatch's LinkedIn page type data for August 2026 shows that engines cite very different LinkedIn content:
| Engine | Pulse articles | Posts | Company pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| All combined | 30.41% | 27.75% | 18.05% |
| ChatGPT | 3.65% | 26.45% | 33.68% |
| AI Mode | 34.66% | 24.39% | 13.53% |
| AI Overviews | 34.51% | 23.06% | 14.46% |
| Perplexity | 26.01% | 37.32% | 22.03% |
So for ChatGPT, a well-kept company page matters more than a Pulse article. For Perplexity, personal posts lead. A LinkedIn tracker that doesn't break out page types leaves this on the table.
What to look for in a social citation tracker
There are six capabilities worth checking, and most tools have only one or two:
- Per-engine reporting, so ChatGPT's Reddit collapse isn't averaged away by AI Overviews.
- URL-level detail: the exact thread, video or post cited, not just the domain.
- A "my channels" filter so you can see citations that point to your own accounts.
- Trend lines with collection volume, so you can separate real shifts from artifacts.
- Real UI data rather than only API outputs, since user-facing answers and citations differ.
- A path from insight to action, such as a content brief or a task list.
Which GEO tools cover social sources
A caveat up front: I only have first-hand detail on one platform's social coverage. For the others, the table below reflects positioning from their public descriptions and general category knowledge. Check each vendor's current feature list and pricing before you buy, because these products change monthly.
Promptwatch has dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports covering the subreddits, videos, channels and posts AI cites, plus a "My channels" filter. It also classifies every citation into source types and tracks per-engine trends, which is the kind of view you need for the ChatGPT-versus-Google split above. Its agents can then turn a citation's prompts into a content brief and track whether the published page gets cited.

Otterly.AI publishes some of the best social citation research and is a lower-cost prompt tracker. It is positioned as monitoring-focused.

Bluefish is the source of the 16% versus 10% YouTube-versus-Reddit finding and sells to enterprise teams.

AEO Vision advertises Reddit and TikTok insight, which makes it worth a look if those two are your priority.

Sentrasa focuses on Reddit reputation and AI search visibility, and ReplyAgent.ai automates Reddit marketing. Treat automation here carefully, given the ban risk Otterly's experiment ran into.

Profound, Scrunch, Peec AI and AthenaHQ are established names for general AI visibility monitoring. Confirm whether their reports go down to individual social URLs before assuming they do.
MentionBird and Mentions.so lean toward showing which sources AI cites in your category, which overlaps with social source discovery.

| Tool | Social source focus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Dedicated Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn reports, My channels filter | Also links to content creation and tracking |
| Otterly.AI | Strong research on social citations | Monitoring-focused |
| Bluefish AI | YouTube and Reddit citation share research | Enterprise |
| AEO Vision | Reddit and TikTok insight | Verify depth |
| Sentrasa | Reddit reputation | Narrower scope |
| Profound, Scrunch, Peec AI | General AI visibility | Verify social URL-level reporting |

A practical way to use the data
- Split your prompts by engine and see where your buyers actually are. If they use ChatGPT, stop betting on Reddit threads. If they use Google, video should be near the top of your list.
- Pull the cited URLs. Find which threads, videos and posts the engines use for your category prompts.
- Match format to engine. Company pages and posts for ChatGPT's LinkedIn citations, Pulse articles for Google's.
- Measure with rolling averages. Single-day swings, like the Aug 14 Reddit cliff, can be artifacts.
- Recheck monthly. These shares moved by several multiples in a few months.
What I would not do
I would not build a strategy on a pre-August Reddit study for ChatGPT. I would not average engines together. And I would not buy a tool solely because it says "social listening" on the box. Classic social listening tools like Brand24 and Meltwater track social mentions of you. That is a different job from tracking which social pages AI engines cite.
Bottom line
Social citation tracking only helps if it is per-engine and URL-level. The data right now says YouTube for Google, LinkedIn for ChatGPT and Perplexity, and Reddit as a smaller, shifting factor. Verify each tool against that checklist, and recheck the numbers next month.
