Key takeaways
- On August 8, 2026, ChatGPT began using the
site:operator at scale. Promptwatch Data shows these queries jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of all fanout queries in one day. - On August 14, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from a 3.83% average to under 1%. The Aug 14-17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.
- Reference sources, retailers, hotel brands and official pages picked up the slack, not other forums.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cut Reddit only gradually, so each engine needs its own tracking.
- The practical fix: make your own domain a good retrieval surface, re-run fanout analyses, and stop relying on Reddit as a ChatGPT strategy.
What actually happened in August 2026
Two things hit ChatGPT Search within a week of each other. First the query behavior changed. Then Reddit disappeared.
The order matters, because most of the early commentary treated them as separate stories. They probably are not. Let's take each in turn and then look at how they fit together.
The site: surge on August 8
According to Promptwatch Data on ChatGPT's site: operator fanouts, ChatGPT began scoping background searches to a single domain at scale on August 8, 2026. The share of fanout queries using site: went from 0.37% to 16.8% overnight. That is roughly 46x in a day.
Before that date it sat at 0.3-0.5% for weeks, about 1 in 280 fanouts. It dipped to 0.15% on Aug 3-5, which fits a staged rollout or a pre-launch experiment. Since August 8, about 1 in 6 fanouts targets a specific domain.
The second number is the one I find more interesting. The average number of fanouts per response rose from about 1.08 to about 1.83 on the same day and stayed there. If site: searches had replaced generic queries, that average would have stayed flat. Instead ChatGPT is running the generic searches and then adding domain-scoped ones on top.
A single-day jump also tells you something about the cause. This looks like a model or system-prompt rollout on OpenAI's side. Nothing individual sites did could produce a step change like that. For context on the broader fanout behavior, see Promptwatch's ChatGPT query fanouts report.
The Reddit drop on August 14
Six days later came the cliff. Promptwatch's Reddit data, covering July 7 to August 17, 2026, shows reddit.com held a steady 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7. That was one of the largest shares of any domain. On August 14 it fell below 1%.
- Aug 8: a smaller slide begins, from the high 3s to the mid 2s, on the same day as the fanout change
- Aug 14: the sharp drop
- Aug 14-17 average: 0.52%, an 86.4% relative decline
- Last 7 days in the data: 1.50%, down 54.4% against the prior 7 days
Promptwatch is upfront that the size of the drop is provisional. It cannot fully rule out a data-collection issue, and it suggests checking collection volume around August 14. Fair enough, but other datasets point the same way.
An independent check from Otterly
Otterly.AI ran the question across 16 brand reports in unrelated industries, from Netflix and Amazon to the American Red Cross. Its finding: reddit.com citations in ChatGPT fell 73.4% (497 to 132 per day on average), and all 16 reports lost Reddit citations. Three lost every single one.
The useful part is the control. ChatGPT's total citation volume across the same reports rose 3.5%, from about 36.1k to 37.4k per day. So ChatGPT was not simply returning fewer citations. It was choosing Reddit less. Meanwhile Google, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity moved just 0.6% on Reddit over the same window.

Other engines barely moved
Promptwatch's data shows Google AI Overviews slid from a 2.37% first-week average to 2.10% (an 11.3% relative decline) with no single break. AI Mode fell from 2.22% to 1.54% (30.5%), with the clearest step in late July. Neither had an August 14 cliff.
That is why you should track ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode separately and use rolling trends instead of single-day comparisons. Lumping them together would hide the fact that this was a ChatGPT event.
For a broader view of social platforms, Promptwatch's October 2026 social citations report found that from Sep 28 to Oct 4, ChatGPT got just 0.46% of its citations from social platforms, while Google AI Overviews got 12.2%. The gap has stuck.
Why did Reddit drop? What we know and don't know
Here is where I would be careful.
Some sources, including an explainx.ai write-up, claim Reddit deliberately blocked crawlers via robots.txt. Promptwatch does not confirm that cause, and I could not verify it independently, so treat it as unconfirmed. Others have pointed to Google's May 2026 core update and Reddit's AI-translated pages dropping in Google, which flowed downstream to AI search. That might explain part of the Google-side slide. It does not explain a one-day cliff in ChatGPT.

Otterly makes one more useful point: the popular theory that Reddit cleaned up its own content does not survive the data, since the other engines kept citing the same threads ChatGPT dropped.
OpenAI has not explained the change in anything I found. So the honest summary is this: the timing lines up with the site: rollout, the pattern is specific to ChatGPT, and the root cause is not public.
What replaced Reddit
This is the part that matters most for rankings. Otterly's study found the gap was filled by reference sources and official pages, not by other forums. Wikipedia, official brand pages and competitor pages all rose in most categories. Government and NGO sources split evenly.
A separate analysis of retail and travel prompts shows who gained between May 12-Jun 11 and Aug 28-Sep 27, 2026:
| Industry | Domain | Before | After | Change (points) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retail | rtings.com | 0.26% | 1.32% | +1.06 |
| Retail | nbcnews.com | 0.27% | 1.33% | +1.06 |
| Retail | goodhousekeeping.com | 1.33% | 2.30% | +0.97 |
| Retail | consumerreports.org | 0.22% | 0.85% | +0.63 |
| Travel | marriott.com | 1.90% | 5.31% | +3.41 |
| Travel | hilton.com | 1.13% | 3.68% | +2.55 |
| Travel | hyatt.com | 0.34% | 2.50% | +2.16 |
| Travel | expedia.com | 0.60% | 2.46% | +1.86 |
The same study tracked Reddit's share of retail citations falling from 15.05% in mid-May to 0.14% by late September. Travel went from 13.11% to 0.04%. That is a much bigger fall than the site-wide average suggests, because Reddit was so dominant in product and travel research.
Notice the pattern. Hotel brands gained the most in travel. Review publishers and retailers gained in retail. Domain-scoped searches reward sites with a clear, indexable answer on the topic, and brands with their own comprehensive pages benefit.
How ChatGPT's citation mix looks now
A few other Promptwatch Data findings describe the current shape of ChatGPT ranking:
- Product pages are the most cited content type at 22.4% of citations (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), followed by landing pages and listicles.
- Almost half of ChatGPT responses cite 10 or more unique domains in the same week, so there are many slots to compete for.
- Mid-authority sites earn the most. Domain rank 46-75 took almost half of citations in August 2026, while DR 91-100 fell to about 3%.
- Landing pages and docs stay cited longest, while news lost half its pages within 36 days in a July 2026 cohort.
Put together with the site: surge, the picture is coherent. ChatGPT is doing more searches per answer, aiming more of them at specific domains, and favoring durable, specific pages over community chatter.
What to do about it
Treat your domain as a retrieval surface
A site:yourdomain.com [topic] query can only surface pages that search engines have indexed. So thin category pages, broken internal search and unindexed content now cost you answers. Check that key pages are crawlable and indexed. Google Search Console is the free place to start, and a crawler like Screaming Frog helps find orphaned pages.

Re-run your fanout analysis
Keyword mappings built before August 8 are stale. Fanouts per response went from about 1.08 to 1.83, so there are more angles being searched. Cover comparisons, pricing, alternatives and domain-scoped lookups for each topic, not just the head term.
Rebuild the Reddit part of your strategy
If you leaned on Reddit threads to get named in ChatGPT, that lever is mostly gone for now. Reddit still matters in Google's AI surfaces, so don't abandon it, but stop expecting ChatGPT lift from it. Put the effort into pages you own, plus the reference and review sites that now get cited instead.
Track each engine separately
Because the shifts were so uneven across engines, you need per-engine tracking with enough history to see step changes. Tools like Promptwatch can track real ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode responses and show crawler logs and citation trends, which is how data like the above gets caught early.

There are plenty of alternatives for basic monitoring. A few worth a look:
| Tool | Focus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Tracking plus optimization | Crawler logs, citation trends, content gap analysis, content agent |
| Otterly.AI | Prompt and citation tracking | Published the 16-brand Reddit study |
| Peec AI | Monitoring | Tracking without the optimization layer |
| Profound | Enterprise visibility | Monitoring-heavy |
| Semrush | SEO suite | AI tracking added to a broader platform |

A short checklist
- Confirm your money pages are indexed and return clean responses.
- Add depth to thin category and hub pages so a
site:search finds something useful. - Re-map prompts to fanouts and fill the gaps for comparisons, pricing and alternatives.
- Check your Reddit-dependent prompts in ChatGPT and expect lower visibility.
- Review official and reference sources in your category, since those gained.
- Watch rolling trends per engine, not single-day numbers.
What we still don't know
Three open questions. Will OpenAI keep site: at roughly 1 in 6 fanouts, or tune it again? Is Reddit's disappearance permanent or a policy toggle? And how much of the size of the drop is measurement noise? Promptwatch itself calls the size provisional.
What I would not do is wait for answers. The direction is clear enough. ChatGPT now searches more, goes to specific domains more, and cites forums far less. Optimize for that, and recheck your numbers every few weeks.
