Key takeaways

  • GenRank is a ChatGPT-focused visibility tracker with some useful extras: a Crawlability Audit, Retrieval Simulation, Entity Monitor and Ad Insights. It is clean and approachable, and priced low at the entry tier.
  • It is mostly a monitoring product. Compared with Promptwatch, it lacks a content-generation agent with CMS publishing, IP-verified AI crawler logs, AI visitor and conversion analytics, Search Console and Bing data next to AI data, prompt volumes and difficulty scoring, and Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports.
  • Multi-engine coverage is not clearly documented. The company's own materials say tracking is built mainly around ChatGPT, so confirm which engines you get before you buy.
  • Entry pricing is $69/month for 25 prompts and one brand. The Pro plan at $199/month is where the interesting features (Content Optimizer, Query Fan-Outs, Ad Insights) unlock.
  • Best for small agencies and in-house teams that want ChatGPT tracking and tidy client reporting without a big budget.

GenRank is an AI search visibility platform that tells marketing teams how their brand shows up in ChatGPT answers. It was founded in August 2024 and started life under the name Gentrack. The first version was oddly manual: users exported their ChatGPT conversation history and uploaded it so the tool could scan for brand mentions. It was later rebuilt as a proper tracking platform and renamed GenRank. The company says more than 2,000 brands use it, though that figure is self-reported.

The target audience is SEO and marketing teams, and especially agencies. Testimonials on the site come from a Swedish agency founder (Recrawled) and a marketer at Belgium's Krachtig Online, who says GenRank sits behind 25+ GEO client projects. That fits the product: it has team access, client-ready PDF reports and an API, which are the things a small agency actually needs.

The pitch is that conversational search has two halves. First you get mentioned, then you convert the person asking by shaping how you are positioned against competitors. Most of the product is built around those two jobs.

Key features

Brand visibility and prompt tracking. You add a brand and a set of prompts, and GenRank runs them daily against ChatGPT, then records whether you are mentioned, where, and next to whom. The Essential plan gives you 25 prompts and daily response updates. A recent Prompt Detail Drawer lets you click a prompt, compare visibility across brands, open individual responses, and see the raw answer for a given day along with citations and metrics. That raw-response view answers one of the site's own FAQs ("does GenRank show the actual AI responses?") and is the part I would check first in a trial.

Competitor insights and sentiment. Competitors are tracked next to your brand, and a sentiment chart with stacked and treemap views now includes competitor sentiment. This is solid, standard territory. Sentiment is worth having, but it is the same kind of output that every tracker in this category produces.

Citations and sources. GenRank records which pages and domains AI answers cite. It is the feature that lets you work out where to earn mentions. It stops at the source list, though. There is no content-type classification, citation decay tracking or page-level cited/not-cited analysis of the kind more complete platforms offer.

Brand Radar and social monitoring. Brand Radar scans the web for mentions and sentiment, covering news, reviews and discussions that feed AI answers. The marketing claims a database of 2.2 million brands. It is useful context for reputation work, though it is a broad scan rather than a dedicated Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn citation report.

Crawlability Audit. Added in the July 2026 update (v3.5.0), this checks robots.txt and other access problems that stop AI crawlers reading your site. It is a good addition, because a surprising number of visibility problems are simply blocked bots. What it is not is a log of real crawler visits. It tells you what could go wrong, not what bots actually did last Tuesday.

Retrieval Simulation and Content Optimizer. This is GenRank's most distinctive idea. It simulates how your page is chunked, retrieved and matched against prompts, so you can see why a page gets overlooked. The Content Optimizer builds on it by suggesting changes that make pages easier for models to read. Both are Pro features. It is a simulation, not observed behavior, so treat the output as a hypothesis to test against real citations.

Query Fan-Outs. Also on Pro, this shows the sub-queries AI runs behind a prompt. Fan-outs are useful for deciding what content to build, and having them at $199 is reasonable. GenRank does not appear to pair them with prompt volume or difficulty scores.

Entity Monitor. Checks whether AI confuses your brand with similarly named entities. This matters more than it sounds if you have a common name, and few tools bother with it.

Ad Insights. Shows which ads appear for which prompts and which competitors are paying, as sponsored placements arrive in ChatGPT. GenRank has been blogging about this ("How to Spy on Your Competitors' ChatGPT Ads"), so it is a real focus rather than a checkbox.

Reporting, team access and API. PDF reports, team seats, and an API exposing rankings, citations, mentions, prompt performance and retrieval insights. API access is on the Custom tier only, which will annoy small teams that want a simple export.

Who is it for

The best fit is a small to mid-sized agency running GEO for a handful of clients, or an in-house marketer at a company with one to three brands. If you are tracking 25 to 150 prompts, want a clean interface and need a PDF to send a client, GenRank covers the ground. Marketing pages call out agencies, e-commerce, recruitment, financial services, travel and real estate. The recruitment angle (becoming the recommended employer in AI answers) is more specific than most competitors bother with.

Teams that live in ChatGPT will get the most from it. If your buyers are mostly asking ChatGPT, a ChatGPT-first product is a reasonable trade for a lower price.

Who should skip it? Enterprises that need SSO, audit logs and security certifications will want to ask hard questions, as I found no public compliance details. Teams that need to prove revenue from AI traffic will miss visitor analytics and crawler logs. And anyone who needs broad multi-engine coverage (Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Meta AI and others) should verify support first, because the documentation points mainly at ChatGPT. Content teams that want the tool to write and publish for them will also outgrow it quickly.

Integrations and ecosystem

Integrations are thin from what is public. There is a documented API (docs at docs.genrank.io) available on the Custom plan, team access, and PDF reports. I did not find native connections to Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Looker Studio, Slack workflows beyond priority Slack support, CMS publishing, or an MCP server. Prompts can be imported from existing projects, which helps when migrating a client setup.

There is no mention of a browser extension or mobile app. The company also warns that imitator sites exist, and says it operates only at genrank.io. Worth a quick check that you sign up on the right domain.

Pricing and value

Pricing as published (confirm on genrank.io/pricing):

  • Essential, $69/month: 1 brand, 25 prompts, brand mentions, citations and sources, competitor insights, sentiment analysis, daily response updates.
  • Pro, $199/month (most popular): everything in Essential, plus Content Optimizer, Brand Radar, Entity Monitor, Query Fan-Outs and Ad Insights, with 3 brands and 150 prompts.
  • Custom, from $349/month: unlimited brands and prompts, usage-based billing, API access and priority Slack support.

There is a 7-day free trial and no permanent free tier. Annual billing is available at a discount.

For comparison, Promptwatch's Essential plan is $95/month for 50 prompts across all models with site audit, 360 Insights, content gap analysis and API access, and its Professional plan is $245/month for 150 prompts. GenRank is cheaper on paper, but you pay less because you get less: ChatGPT-first coverage, no crawler logs, no traffic attribution and no content agent. One G2 reviewer admitted it is "not cheap, but none of these types of tools are right now", while still calling it the best price for the value. That's fair, but it comes from a 2025 review in a pool of six.

Strengths and limitations

What it does well

  • Clean, easy interface. Reviewers keep mentioning simplicity.
  • Retrieval Simulation is a genuinely different angle on why pages get skipped.
  • Crawlability Audit and Entity Monitor cover problems many trackers ignore.
  • Ad Insights tracks ChatGPT advertising early.
  • Low entry price and agency-friendly reporting.

Limitations and gaps versus Promptwatch

GenRank is a monitoring product with some optimization hints. It is direct competition for Promptwatch, and the gaps are real:

  • No content generation or publishing. The Content Optimizer advises. Promptwatch's Content Agent plans, writes and publishes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer, then tracks whether each page gets crawled and cited.
  • No IP-verified AI crawler logs. The Crawlability Audit is a configuration check. Promptwatch logs real bot visits, filters spoofed bots, and maps the crawl-to-citation path.
  • No AI traffic attribution. I found no visitor analytics for AI-referred sessions and conversions.
  • No Search Console or Bing data alongside AI data, so you cannot find pages that rank in Google but never get cited.
  • No prompt volume or difficulty scoring.
  • No Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn citation reports, and no AI Shopping tracking.
  • No Agent Chat or prioritized Action Board.
  • Narrow engine coverage. ChatGPT is the focus. Promptwatch monitors real interfaces across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Alexa, Meta AI and coding agents like Codex and Claude Code.

Social proof is also thin. G2 shows 5.0 from six reviews, the two I could read are from July 2025, and the profile looks unclaimed. A perfect score from six reviews tells you very little.

Bottom line

GenRank is a sensible, affordable pick for a small agency or marketing team that mostly cares about ChatGPT and wants simple tracking and reports. The retrieval simulation and crawlability features are the reasons to try it, and the 7-day trial is long enough to judge them.

If you need to go beyond watching, Promptwatch is the stronger choice. It shows why you are or are not visible, writes and publishes the fix, and measures AI traffic afterward, across far more engines.
