Which Sources Do ChatGPT and AI Overviews Cite for Dutch Queries? A 2026 Guide for Netherlands Marketers

No one has published clean data on which Dutch domains ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite. Here is what the global numbers say, where they likely break for Dutch queries, and how to test your own market.

Key takeaways

  • There is no public, verified dataset that splits ChatGPT or AI Overviews citations by Dutch language or Netherlands domains. Every figure below is global, so treat it as indicative.
  • ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite very different sources. In Promptwatch's data from Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, ChatGPT drew 0.46% of citations from social platforms while AI Overviews drew 12.2%.
  • Ranking in Google does not equal being cited. Ahrefs found only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants rank in Google's top 10 for the original query.
  • The practical move for Dutch marketers is to run your own Dutch and English prompt tests, log who gets cited, and build a baseline before spending money.

The honest starting point: there is no Dutch citation dataset

I went looking for a clean answer to this question and did not find one. Nobody has published a verified breakdown of how often bol.com, nu.nl, Tweakers, nl.wikipedia.org or any other Dutch domain shows up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews answers. Promptwatch has no report split by country or language either. So I am not going to invent a table of Dutch citation shares. Anyone who hands you one without a method is guessing.

What we do have is solid global data on how each engine behaves, plus a few reasons to think the Dutch picture differs. That is useful, as long as you hold it loosely.

Launchmind's overview of AI adoption and search behavior in the Netherlands in 2026

Launchmind's 2026 write-up claims that over 60% of Dutch internet users have used at least one AI tool in the past year, citing Eurostat and CBS. I would check that figure against the primary sources before putting it in a deck, but the direction is plausible: Dutch users are early adopters, so the citation question matters here sooner than in many markets.

What we know about the two engines globally

The two engines behave like different channels. Treat them that way.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT cites a wide spread of domains per answer. Promptwatch's unique domains report shows almost half of ChatGPT responses cite 10 or more unique domains (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026). That is good news for smaller Dutch sites, because the citation pool is not a handful of giants.

Content type matters more than brand name. In the content type report, product pages are the most cited type at 22.4% of citations, followed by landing pages and listicles. If you sell something in the Netherlands, your own product and category pages are a legitimate citation target.

Authority is not what you would expect either. Promptwatch's domain rank report found sites with domain rank 46-75 earned almost half of ChatGPT citations in August 2026, while DR 91-100 fell to about 3%. A mid-sized Dutch publisher or webshop is not at a structural disadvantage.

Social and community sources have mostly left ChatGPT. Promptwatch's Reddit data shows reddit.com's share of ChatGPT citations fell from about 4% to 0.5% on August 14, 2026. In the October social report, all seven tracked social platforms together made up 0.46% of ChatGPT citations. Older third-party figures claiming Reddit is 16.7% of ChatGPT citations reflect earlier behavior and should not drive a 2026 plan.

One more behavior change is worth knowing. On August 8, 2026, ChatGPT started using the site: operator at scale, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries. That suggests ChatGPT increasingly goes to specific domains it already trusts for a topic. Whether it does this for Dutch queries more or less than English ones is unknown.

Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews lean on social and video much more. From Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, 12.2% of AI Overviews citations came from social platforms, about 26 times ChatGPT's share. YouTube led at 4.28%, then Facebook at 2.38%, Reddit at 2.15%, Instagram at 1.61% and LinkedIn at 1.55%.

For Dutch brands that is a concrete hint. Facebook and Instagram still matter in the Netherlands, and a complete YouTube presence in Dutch is cheap to build compared with the upside. Promptwatch's own recommendation from that report is YouTube first for Google audiences, then complete Facebook and Instagram profiles. For ChatGPT, put the effort into your own site and the listicles, guides and comparisons it cites.

A LinkedIn post discussing the rollout of Google AI Overviews in the Netherlands

A LinkedIn article on the Dutch rollout says AI Overviews, powered by Gemini, arrived in the Dutch market and will change search behavior. It stays general, and I found no confirmed rollout date or Dutch-specific citation numbers, so do not build a plan on it beyond the basic fact that AI Overviews now appear for Dutch searches.

The overlap problem

It is tempting to assume that if Google ranks you, both engines will cite you. The numbers say no.

  • BrightEdge found the overlap between the sources two engines cite for the same topics can be as low as 16%.
  • Ahrefs studied 15,000 prompts and found only 12% of URLs cited by assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in Google's top 10 for the original query.

A Neil Patel post makes the same point from his own tests: for most queries, ChatGPT and AI Overviews do not cite the same sources, and ChatGPT tends to cite more domains.

For a Dutch marketer this means a page that sits third on Google.nl can be invisible in ChatGPT, and the reverse. You need to measure each engine separately.

Where Dutch queries probably differ (and where I am guessing)

I want to be clear that this section is reasoning, not data.

  • Language pool. Dutch has far less web content than English. For a Dutch prompt, the set of candidate pages is smaller, which plausibly helps local publishers and shops. Plausible, not proven.
  • Local marketplaces and comparison sites. Promptwatch's category reports show that for travel, booking and search sites earn more than half of ChatGPT citations, and for automotive, marketplaces like Autotrader and Cars.com outrank every car brand. If the same pattern holds in Dutch, expect Dutch marketplaces and comparison sites to beat manufacturers and brands. See the travel report and the automotive report.
  • Regulated topics. In healthcare, government and public health sites earn almost half of ChatGPT citations (healthcare report). Dutch equivalents of those institutions are the likely winners in Dutch health prompts, though I have no data confirming it.
  • Wikipedia. Third-party studies put Wikipedia at anywhere from a few percent to nearly half of ChatGPT's top-source citations, and Promptwatch's own page text and chart disagree on its share. The studies measure different things. I would not quote a Wikipedia number, and whether nl.wikipedia.org gets cited for Dutch prompts is something you should test.
  • English leakage. Dutch users often search in English for tech and B2B topics. Both engines may answer a Dutch question from English sources. That is another reason to test both languages.

A test you can run this week

Both Launchmind and Studio Ubique suggest the same basic method, and it is the right one: ask the engines your customers' questions in Dutch and English, and log who gets cited.

  1. Pick 20 commercial and informational prompts. Write each in natural Dutch, then again in English. Include brand-specific prompts, category prompts ('beste ... voor ...'), and competitor comparisons.
  2. Run each in ChatGPT with search on, and in Google with AI Overviews from a Dutch location. Use the real interfaces, since API outputs can differ from what users see.
  3. Log every cited domain, the content type (product page, listicle, forum, docs, video), and whether you appear.
  4. Group the results. Which domains repeat across prompts? Are they marketplaces, publishers, review sites, institutions, or social platforms?
  5. Repeat monthly. Reddit's fall in ChatGPT happened within days, so a one-off snapshot ages fast.

Twenty prompts is a small sample, so repeat each a few times and look for patterns across prompts rather than single results.

Tools that help

Doing this by hand works for a first pass. Past that, you want automation. Promptwatch tracks the real interfaces of ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews by country and language, and shows which domains and pages get cited, which makes it a reasonable way to build the Dutch dataset that does not exist publicly yet.

What to do with the results

Once you have your own Dutch citation log, three moves usually follow.

First, fix what AI cannot read. If you want ChatGPT to cite your pages, check that its crawlers can reach them. IP-verified crawler logs, which Promptwatch offers, show whether GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot are hitting errors on your Dutch pages. Promptwatch's crawler traffic data shows how much AI crawler activity there is to look at.

Second, write the content types that get cited. For ChatGPT that is product pages, landing pages, listicles, comparisons and guides in Dutch. Landing pages and docs also stay cited longest, while news loses half its pages within 36 days, according to the content half-life report. Evergreen pages are the better investment.

Third, split your channel effort by engine. YouTube and Facebook for AI Overviews. Your own site and third-party listicles for ChatGPT. Do not lean on one platform, because Reddit's collapse in ChatGPT shows how fast a citation source can vanish.

If you would rather hand the work to a team, an agency such as 1001 SEO Media covers technical SEO, content and generative engine optimization for AI search.

Bottom line

We do not yet know which Dutch domains dominate ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and be wary of anyone who claims to. What we do know is that the two engines pull from different places, that Google rankings predict citations poorly, and that ChatGPT has almost stopped citing social platforms while AI Overviews leans on them. Build your own Dutch prompt log this month, and treat it as the dataset that decides where your content budget goes. For more current numbers on how AI engines cite sources, see Promptwatch Data.
